First organized in 1867, the Northern Indiana Historical Society, which owns and operates the Center for History, is the second oldest historical society in Indiana. Before the move to its present location at 808 West Washington, the museum occupied the 1855 St. Joseph County Courthouse for over 75 years. The museum is a private, non-profit institution governed by a Board of Trustees.
