The Staley Manufacturing Company/Stephenson Underwear Mills (322 E. Colfax Street)
Woolen underwear was produced by Staley’s Woolen Mill, located on the east side of the St. Joseph River in 1863. A flume running from the East Race to the river channeled water for the power supply. The company was organized on July 24, 1888. One building from this company still exists today, dating from the 1890s. It is 3-stories, has brick walls with segmental arched brick window openings, and decorative brick corbelling at the top of each bay. Today Stephenson Apartments occupy the building.
